Mayor's Welcome

With a warm Southern welcome I invite you to our beautiful city of Dunedin, heritage and wildlife capital of New Zealand – and home to the outstanding Otago Museum.

Dunedin people place great value on science, research, learning and education. Our historic University is one of New Zealand’s finest. Dunedin is, in essence, a University city, uniting fine minds from all over New Zealand and the world. With a focus on producing excellent research, the University is also home to the Centre of Innovation, which facilitates collaborative research, and a dedicated Centre for Science Communication.

I know you will also find Dunedin and Otago to be places of great beauty. A wide diversity of species, including penguins, seals and albatrosses, live in and around Dunedin’s harbour on the scenic Otago Peninsula. Many other areas of natural and rugged splendour – lakes, mountains and vast uninterrupted countryside – are close at hand. I hope you will take time when you visit to enjoy our truly excellent array of visitor experiences.

It is our privilege to host you in Dunedin for the ASPAC 2010 conference – we look forward to extending our famous ‘southern hospitality’ to you.

Welcome, welcome, welcome to you all.

PETER CHIN
MAYOR OF DUNEDIN CITY

The ASPAC 2010 twist draws on several elements to draw together the essence of ASPAC 2010.

SOUTHERN TREASURE: The twist’s colours and shape evoke pounamu, or New Zealand jade – a special treasure of the South.

FRIENDSHIP: The twist is drawn from a popular shape for pounamu pendants – the infinity symbol, representing ongoing friendship.

INTERTWINING: ASPAC 2010 seeks to facilitate sharing of the collective knowledge of the Asia Pacific Science Centre community and experience, drawing on each other for inspiration and ideas.

GROWTH: Like living plants, ASPAC 2010 delegates will have the opportunity to grow, cross fertilise, and extend out our tendrils to each other.
